History

In 1978, Mayor Derrick Humphreys appointed a committee to explore the possibility of creating a charitable foundation to keep philanthropic monies from leaving West Vancouver.   Members of the committee were: Gordon Rowntree, David  Mathieson and Bill Hyndman.

In September 1979, the first meeting of the Board of Directors was held.  Present:  Mr. Derrick Humphreys, Mr. Gordon Rowntree, Mr. David Mathieson, Mr. Bill Hyndman, Mr. Frank Griffiths, Jr.  (for his father), Mr. Charlie Hopkins, Mrs. Kay Meek, Mrs. Mary Pattison, Mrs. Shirley Sager.

Over the past three decades, the Foundation has accumulated net assets in excess of $4 million, has more than 42 funds, has granted over $1.1 million in support of community projects and organizations and awarded $161,00 in scholarships to students in the community.The West Vancouver Community Foundation is one of over 176 Canadian community foundations.  These foundations provide a stable source of funding through permanent endowment funds that permit members of the community to assess changing needs and allocate financial support where required.
